Disk Dosinia Dosinia discus (Reeve)
Description: (3 inches) Round, flat, disklike shell similar to elegant dosinia. Fine concentric ridges --about 50 ridges per inch. Beak curves forward. Cardinal teeth on hinge. Lunule and pallial sinus.
Color: Shiny white interior and exterior. Thin, yellow periostracum.
Habitat: Lives in sounds and just offshore on shallow sand flats. Commonly found on sound and ocean beaches.
Range: Virginia to Yucatan.

Sally Thomas: I've been calling them disk dosinias but the two are quite similar. Elegant is larger and has less crowded concentric ridges. The picture by the ruler shows none over 2".
Terri Hathaway: Some of those photos include shells that look like something other than disc dosinias. They look too oblong for dosinia. They're more like surf clams or something similar. Good luck with those. Maybe Sally can ID them?

Thank you for this web page. Me and my son (3 years old) were walking near the ocean (at Santa Barbara) and we have found some shells. And we were wondering theirs names. Your page helped us a lot. So we found disk dosinia and may be Lucine?! But what's the differance?
